Encouragement - Finish Well

"Finish well"

This phrase is one we hear often this time of year. Perhaps it is something you are saying to yourself and your students as a reminder to persevere to the end. You might be wondering how exactly you are supposed to “finish well” when you are hoping just to finish at all. As Classical educators our view of education should be different from conventional education where the learning has a start date and an end date. Sure, there is a beginning and end to the on campus school year, but training our children in virtue, teaching them to love what is True, Good, and Beautiful, and instilling in them a desire and vision for the Good Life doesn’t end on May 17th. Classical Education is much like spiritual sanctification; on this side of heaven it ebbs and it flows, it doesn’t begin and end. Don’t misunderstand me, persevering to the end is an honorable endeavor, and you should all participate in it. But, if you find yourself discouraged at the prospect of “finishing well,” take heart because this is not the end, it is merely an ebbing away.

Sincerely,
Katie Lockette
